Maton W.A. May Custom Shop Dreadnought Cutaway #903
Wow, this one blew me away with the first strum.. When it arrived I actually thought they had send me the wrong guitar because the box was so incredibly light, but really the guitar is very light and therefor amazingly resonant. Aside from an excellent selection of wood that's not only aesthetically pleasing, the weight of the woods has clearly been taken into account when building this guitar. Add to this the "light bracing" and you end up with a guitar that resonates freely, and offers endless sustain.
Maton is known to source many of their woods locally, and in this case the back and sided are made of the finest grade of Blackwood. The binding and lighter parts of the headstock overlay may look like flamed maple, but are actually a wood called Satinbox. This species grows next to the blackwood trees sourced from the same area.
The W.A. May model pays hommage to Bill May, the founder of Maton guitars. His family still run the company today. This particular guitar is #903, meaning it's the 903rd guitar made in the Maton Custom Shop by master luthier Andy Allen. Next to a signed certificate you'll find a USB-stick included with pictures of the building process. It's great to see a company putting so much passion into their guitars.
We've seen many Maton's here at Dear Wood, and the level of crafstmanship has been nothing short of excellent, but this W.A. May dread from the Maton Custom Shop takes it to a whole new level!
